Dental supply budget benchmarks (cited public sources)
Benchmarks help you set a supply budget. They are not SaveSame results, and they are not a promise that your office will hit them.
ADA practice-management guidance
The American Dental Association’s practice-management page on dental supplies and inventory control states a rule of thumb that inventory costs should be no more than about 5–6% of collections, with office supplies generally not exceeding about 2%, and that any single month’s supply allocation should not exceed about 6% of the prior month’s collections. Michigan Dental Association journal guidance (general vs specialty)
An MDA Journal article, “How to Budget Better for Dental Supplies,” describes a target of about 5% to 7% of revenue on clinical supplies for a full-time one-doctor restorative general practice (excluding general office supplies and equipment), and lists higher specialty ranges (for example orthodontics roughly 8–10%, periodontics 11–13%). 2025 Dental Accounting Group survey (sample of practices)
The 2025 Dental Practice Financial Survey (Dental Accounting Group / Dental Accounting Pros; year-end 2024 figures; 224 practices in the published overview) reports dental supplies as roughly 5.41% to 6.34% of revenue across the published practice-size buckets. How to use benchmarks with SaveSame
- Compute your own clinical supply % of collections for the last 3–6 months.
- If you are above your chosen ceiling, audit high-spend MPNs with exact-match price checks.
- Do not treat a benchmark gap as “guaranteed SaveSame savings.” SaveSame only reports historical differences on exact matches from your imports.
